Sad week.

It has been a sad week. We lost a high school friend.

I don't know how many of you knew him. His name was Gan Kine Yee, better known as 'Ah Fat'. He was my friend.

I don't have a good memory. I remember that we used to be very close, but I can't remember when (which year). I remember we used to hang out a lot, but I can't remember where we used to hang out at. I remember...remember...well, I don't remember much, do I?

I think he was the kind of friend that comes into your life, leave a big impression, and then fade out without you realising it. I have friends I called 'brothers' or 'sisters', which I will remember till the day I die. And then also the kind like Ah Fat. I know him, but not much. We were close, but just for a little while.

It's always very sad to loose someone you know, close or not. I can't remember much of our times spent together, but deep down, I do know that we were quit close, and yes, I will miss you.

Rest in peace my friend.

Culture shock.

Abigail, my wife and me went back to Malaysia for a holiday recently, 1st June till 22nd June 2010. The last time I went home was in 2006. Kuala Lumpur changed so much in just 4 years...I was a bit shocked!

The one thing I really don't like about KL now is that it has too many high rises around. No matter where you turn your head, there are bound to be some multi-storey apartment buildings blocking your view. And there are more being build around these existing ones! Does KL really need so many apartments? Last I heard, a lot of people move away from Malaysia every year. Maybe there are even MORE people moving into Malaysia? Who are these people? Where are they from? Is there a country worse than the current Malaysia? I don't know...

When I left KL in 2006, I was thinking of coming back to Malaysia to start a career or a business. When I left KL two weeks ago, I was glad I didn't move back in 2006. It's ok to go back for a couple of weeks for a holiday but, to actually live there, I doubt it. I was also surprised, to find that the living cost in KL is actualy higher than in Edinburgh.

Something is seriously wrong with my beloved Malaysia. It is sick. It needs help.

Who can help?

100th post!

Wow! What an honour, to be writing the 100th post on this blog!

Well, I guess that's simply because I am the only one left blogging here...never mind, I will keep blogging and keep hoping that one day, someone else will blog something too.

This time, I would like to write a little bit about one of the dearest things to my heart - Malaysia. I was on YouTube yesterday. Nothing better to watch, I keyed in 'Malaysia'. A lot of rubbish came up but also something very interesting - DAP's speeches from 2008 and 2009. The speaker was someone named Nga Kor Ming (倪可敏). His speech was so powerful and humorous, I spend almost two hours listening to him.

Since I have been away for so long (almost 14 years), I don't know how much of what he was saying was the truth, but his speech made me very sad, and also angry. If what he said was the truth, then Malaysia has become a very 'disfunctional' nation. The government is corrupted from the very top. And no one has the power to do anything. According to DAP, the 'rakyat' has the power to 'throw' the government out of the office...I really doubt that this will happen.

Ever since Malaysia gained its independence in 1957, its 'rakyat' has been divided into 2 classes - First class (Bumiputra), and Second class, the rest of us! I don't know if there are any other countries on earth that still have a class system. Even Indonesia has abolished this system (according to Mr.Nga). So, that puts Malaysia BEHIND Indonesia. What a joke! (No offence to Indonesia.)

I was treated as first class the moment I put my feet on British soil. After gaining my PR, I enjoyed even more benefits. I sometimes suspect that I enjoy more benefits than the ordinary British people!

There will be a big election soon in Malaysia. I hope every 'rakyat' will put in an effort to vote for a 'change'. Any change will do. If there is a CHANGE in power, there is a CHANCE. If DAP were to win the election and move into office, then there is a 'CHANCE'. I can't promise that the 'change' will be a good thing (DAP might be more corrupted, who knows!) but it will definitely bring a glimmer of hope...

Good Luck Malaysians!

19 February, 2010

It's been a while.

Wow! It's been more than three months since I last blog here, time flies!

First of all, wish all of you a Happy Belated Chinese New Year! It's the year of the Tiger and I wish all of you as energetic and as healthy as a roaring tiger!

In a foreign country, I can't really feel it's Chinese New Year. I don't know about other cities but Edinburgh is as dull as ever...not even a lion dance performance...how I missed Chinese New Year in Malaysia. One day, I will go back to Malaysia for Chinese New Year.
